Gentle Heart

This is a song I wrote for any one of the 9/11 firemen who were caught going up and going down the staircases in the twin towers. I think of all the gentle families who lost their gentle heroes on that day.

I was born with a gentle heart
To a gentleman and his gentle wife
All my days filled with gentle ways
So why do you take my gentle life

I was raised with a gentle heart
From the gentle morn
through the gentle night
Does your god give a gentle nod
For taking away my gentle heart

There isn’t any answer
To the fundamental question:
“Why are we alive?”
It seems you have decided
The answer is provided
By taking away my gentle life

And now I die with a gentle heart
On a gentle morn with a gentle start
You took the heart from my gentle life
But you’ll never take the life
from my gentle heart
